Did you have to learn a foreign language in prep or secondary school ? Did you enjoy it?
When you think of learning foreign languages, what comes to mind?
-It's difficult" "I hate it" "It's boring" "I'm dropping it asap"-
The truth is, majority of learners ( including me) studying a foreign language, hated it ! And still do to this day.
Let's face it, Jamaica isn't renowned for its multilingualism, but our strategic global positioning, indicates that we should be heading more in that direction!
The apathy towards foreign languages isn't on the decline. But most learners agree that having a foreign language can open so many doors, economically and socially.
So we know it's advantageous, but learners still opt to avoid it.
So the thinking was, what if there were a learning environment specifically designed to remove the barriers, make language more appealing, understandable, inclusive, engaging?
This zeal to change the narrative gave birth to TLB in March of 2019.
The first of its kind in Clarendon, TLB made its home 75 Manchester Avenue, May Pen. This was the perfect location for our unique learning space because of its proximity to schools, and it being a family owned property. Nellie Stewart, the founder's grandmother, in 1964, owned and operated a bar and grocery, popularly known as Dominion House, which one section would later become The Language Boutique.
First impressions are lasting. From the first step through the door, learners should feel at ease, but most importantly feel a sense of conduciveness to learning (languages). It was important that TLB be a hub that embodied these characteristics. Giving our very best, from the aesthetic design and feel with the choice of colours in each space, the furniture, the wall decor, to the quality of service provided was at the core of TLB's establishment.
The appeal and success of brand TLB resulted in a demand for face to face classes in Kingston. Hence the addition of a second location on Constant Spring Road.
The essence of TLB is felt at this second location with emphasis on personalized classes and maximum interaction.
At the very forefront of TLB's mission, is the emphasis on quality.
Classes are designed to accommodate no more than 10 per group. This ensures quality instruction and interaction at all levels.
"One one cocoa full basket." A Jamaican quote meaning one step at a time. One client at a time, is how TLB has grown from one (1) client, to two (2) , to twenty five (25) clients and is continuing its upward trajectory. This business growth has had a positive effect on the community of Clarendon, with TLB contractually hiring teaching and support staff from within the area. We sincerely thank you for your support and look forward to continued relations.
